Xiaomi is a Chinese tech giant with a particular focus on smartphones and the internet of things. In June 2021 is became the number one smartphone brand in the world when it comes to sales volume, displacing Samsung and Apple for the first time. And while it hasn’t consistently remained at the very top, it’s frequently in the top two or three.
The brand's enormous growth since its founding in 2010 has occurred mostly in its huge home market, as well as India. In recent years, however, it has started to make a concerted push into Western markets.
Its flagship range is the Xiaomi series, but it also owns the popular Redmi budget sub-brand and the increasingly popular Poco mid-range sub-brand.
Xiaomi was an early 5G adopter, announcing the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G in February 2019. Since then, a huge number of Xiaomi phones have supported 5G, including but not limited to the following:

Across its three main smartphone brands, Xiaomi offers several choices for every budget. It has assembled a genuinely rich and varied roster.
You can roughly divide Xiaomi's smartphone offering into three main sub-brands: Xiaomi (premium), Poco (mid-range), and Redmi (budget), though there's a fair amount of overlap.
So to choose the best Xiaomi phone for you, simply look for the latest models in the sub-brand that most fits your needs.
Xiaomi's top-of-the-line flagship phone at the time of writing is the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, which offers cutting edge components across the board, including a stunning 6.73-inch QHD+ 120Hz AMOLED display and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. It also has a 50MP main camera, a 50MP ultra-wide, a 50MP telephoto (with 3.2x optical zoom), and a 50MP periscope (with 5x optical zoom).
And you also get a big 5,000mAh battery with speedy 90W charging.
The cheapest Xiaomi phone that’s widely available at the time of writing is the Redmi A3, which costs just £79 SIM-free. It features a 6.71-inch HD+ LCD display with a 90Hz refresh rate, a MediaTek Helio G36 processor, and an 8MP camera.
Xiaomi has a number of great-value smartphones, regardless of budget, but our pick at the time of writing for the best overall value Xiaomi phone would be the Xiaomi 14T.
This is an almost-flagship with a more mid-range price tag. It has a 6.67-inch 1220 x 2712 AMOLED screen with a silky-smooth 144Hz refresh rate, a powerful MediaTek Dimensity 8300 Ultra chipset, 12GB of RAM, a 5,000mAh battery with 57W charging, and a triple-lens camera, including a 50MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide, and a 50MP telephoto with 2x optical zoom.
It's genuinely tough to keep track of recent Xiaomi phone releases, as it launches so many variants across so many different territories. Unlike Samsung and Apple, it doesn't have a single line-up that it launches globally.
However, two of its latest models at the time of writing are the Xiaomi 14T and the Xiaomi 14T Pro, both of which landed in September of 2024.
Xiaomi has earned its place among the smartphone elite with a dizzyingly vast roster of phones that compete at all budgets. The latest Xiaomi series provides a top quality flagship experience, the Poco sub-brand punches well above its weight in the middle of the market, and the Redmi sub-brand turns out some of the most solid cheap phones money can buy.
It can be difficult to get a complete overview of Xiaomi's smartphone offering, as it's rather fractured and region-specific. But make no mistake, Xiaomi is now a major player on the global stage, with an established UK roster. You can buy into this brand with confidence.
