O2 has just launched two new services that will completely modernize voice calls. These services are Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling, and they’re available at no extra cost.
Wi-Fi Calling is pretty self-explanatory, in that it lets you make and receive calls over Wi-Fi. If you’re an O2 customer you might rightly point out that the company’s TU Go app already allowed this, but that required an app, this is seamless using your normal number and dialler.
4G Calling is similarly simple, as it lets you make calls over a 4G network, when previously you couldn’t. That’s handy as you might have a 4G signal where you don’t have a 2G or 3G one, so you can call in more places.
As Wi-Fi networks can be installed anywhere, even in places like the London Underground, Wi-Fi Calling is perhaps even more versatile. And you don’t need to worry about moving out of the Wi-Fi network’s range, as it’s smart enough to seamlessly switch between Wi-Fi and 4G networks, without disrupting your call.
So, for example you could start a call over Wi-Fi in your office, then walk out to the street and continue it on 4G, with no interruption.
Both of these services should help indoors especially, where signal isn’t always strong, and in the case of 4G Calling you should even experience clearer sound quality and faster call setup times. Calling over 4G also means you can keep on browsing and downloading while on your call, where before your handset would have had to switch to slower data.
The fact that your phone won’t be switching between network types as much could also improve your phone’s battery life, so there are loads of benefits.
Getting up and running
Using either of these services is simple. In fact, if they’re activated on your phone they’ll be used automatically when you’re on a Wi-Fi or 4G network.
However, initially they’re only available to Pay Monthly, SIM Only and business customers with an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus. If that’s you, you should get a software update soon to enable the service, but O2 promises that more devices will be supported very soon.
Wi-Fi Calling will work anywhere with Wi-Fi, but 4G Calling is initially only available in London, Leeds and Slough, with more cities set to get support for it over the coming months.
Note that Wi-Fi and 4G Calling won’t work if you have O2 TU Go installed, but then, you shouldn’t need it anymore once Wi-Fi Calling is available to you, so once you get the update you can safely delete it.
