Chromecast for Vodafone 4G customers, a nice little number
Google’s Chromecast is an impressive little device. It’s barely bigger than a USB stick and lets you fling content from media apps on your phone, such as Netflix and YouTube, over to your TV, while continuing to control them from your phone, so there’s no remote needed.
It’s been available for a while, but Vodafone has only just started selling it and it’s the first UK mobile network to do so. Anyone can buy it from Vodafone for £30, which is the usual price it sells for, but if you’re a new or existing Red 4G customer Vodafone will knock £5 off the price, so you can get it for just £25.
It’s worth noting that another potential benefit of being a Red 4G customer is that you can choose to get a six month Netflix subscription with your contract and Netflix is one of the supported Chromecast apps, so along with your phone contract you could get a fairly complete home entertainment solution for just £25 extra.
However it’s also worth noting that while Red 4G customers get it cheaper it doesn’t actually work over 4G, you’ll need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network to cast anything from your phone to Google’s media device.
Chromecast is only going to get better with time as more apps add support for it. For example just the other day Tesco’s Blinkbox service was added to it, so it’s a sound investment and if you’re a Red 4G customer this is one of the cheapest ways to get it, while if you’re in the market for a new phone contract the lure of free Netflix plus a cut-price Chromecast could be hard to resist, which is presumably what Vodafone’s hoping for.
