Three mobile broadband refers to the mobile broadband plans and devices that Three sells. As for mobile broadband itself, that’s a way to get laptops and other portable devices online when you’re away from home or the office, and perhaps don’t have any Wi-Fi available.
It works by letting your devices connect to a mobile network – in this case Three’s. So as long as there’s a 5G, 4G, or 3G signal from Three where you are, you’ll be able to get any device that supports Wi-Fi online.
Most mobile broadband devices are typically battery-powered, so they don’t need plugging in, and they can wirelessly broadcast a Wi-Fi network to a large number of other gadgets. However, there are also mobile broadband dongles that you plug directly into a USB port, to bring Wi-Fi to the device they’re plugged into.
Three mobile broadband is simply an affordable, convenient, and secure way to ensure you can get your laptop, tablet, or other devices online wherever you are, since all you need is mobile signal in order to create a Wi-Fi network for them.
This makes it a great choice when travelling, such as when on a train or a bus, as well as when in coffee shops, hotel rooms, or anywhere else that either doesn’t have Wi-Fi you can access or only has public Wi-Fi.
Why would you choose Three mobile broadband over public Wi-Fi? Well, it’s far more secure for a start, and it can be a cheaper choice than often pricey public Wi-Fi networks. It’s also often faster, as well as being quicker to get online with, since you don’t need to register as you often do with public Wi-Fi.
Three is a particularly good choice for mobile broadband too because it’s one of the leading 5G networks, with better 5G coverage than many rivals and – according to many independent tests – higher average 5G speeds. Three’s mobile broadband plans are also competitively priced.

At the time of writing Three stocks just two mobile broadband devices – the Three 5G MiFi and the Three 4G MiFi.
The Three 5G MiFi is the fastest of these, offering 5G speeds of up to 1Gbps – though real world speeds will typically be lower. It can also connect up to 32 devices to the internet, and it has an eight-hour battery life.
The Three 4G MiFi as the name suggests is a 4G mobile broadband router, and it can get up to 32 devices online, and supports download speeds of up to 300Mbps and upload speeds of up to 50Mbps – though that’s the theoretical limit of the hardware, while real world 4G speeds are a lot lower.
The Three 4G MiFi is also compact, so it’s easy to carry around with you, and it supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, while its 2,150mAh battery delivers up to 9 hours of active use or 300 hours of standby time.
Three has 99.8% 4G population coverage, so you can truly get a 4G signal on Three almost everywhere in the UK, which in turn means you’ll be able to use Three mobile broadband almost everywhere.
Additionally, Three has 5G coverage in over 60% of the UK outdoors, so you should be able to get a 5G signal much of the time as well (though you’ll need a 5G mobile broadband device to take advantage of this).
Yes, with Three you can buy a data SIM which comes just with a monthly data allowance, and then put that in a mobile broadband device you already own, to get mobile broadband powered by Three’s network.
This is a great choice if you want to buy a mobile broadband router outright too. Three’s data-only SIMs come with up to unlimited data as well, so there’s no limit to how much you can use.
Mobile broadband is also available from EE, Vodafone, and O2, each of which have their own selection of mobile broadband devices and plans, so check them out too.
